La Vittoria Philharmonic Society

It was the year 1906 when Mellieha’s first band club, the “La Vittoria” Philharmonic Society, was founded after years of great willingness from the village inhabitants. Giovanni Vella, Salvatore Grima, Francesco Bonello, Giuseppe Muscat, and Angelo Abela were amongst the first founders of this band club; “La Vittoria”, whose name was presumably appointed by the Parish Priest of that time, Fr. Francesco Grima.

The “La Vittoria” Philharmonic Society has taken part in several major activities, both in Malta and likewise abroad. Amid the club’s most important appearances, one can mention the participation in the celebrations of Malta’s Independence Day on 21^st September 1964, when the band club saluted Queen Elizabeth when Her Majesty was on a visit to Malta, and also the numerous visits abroad to Sicily, in 1930, 1949, 1980, 1989, and recently, in 1994.

Yearly the “La Vittoria” band club takes part in the Carnival Competition that is organized in February. Since its first participation in this competition, the “La Vittoria” Philharmonic Society has always placed amongst the first positions.

In 2007, the “La Vittoria” Philharmonic Society is heading for its 100^th anniversary: 100 years of history, significant events, and vital contribution to our beloved village of Mellieha.

La Vittoria Band Club Events for the Feast 2007

• Thursday, 23 rd August

6.45p.m – Band Marches starting from the Sanctuary finishing at the La Vittoria Band Club.
8.00p.m – A mass will be celebrated by the Bishop Mons. Mario Grech together with Mellieha Priest Kun Karm Mercieca and Rev. Mons. Dun Mose’ Debono, ex priests that were in Mellieha in the last few years.

• Friday, 24 th August

7.30p.m – A tomobola will be held for the elderly at the Hall ‘Maria Bambina’ in La Vittoria Band Club with a difference animated by Elio Lombardi & Carmelo Borg.

• Saturday, 25 th August

8.00p.m – BBQ organised by the La Vittoria Band Club. Many famous singers and dancers will be participating presented by Robert Cutajar & Lisa Libreri.

• Sunday, 26 th August

7.00p.m – Marches and a parata will be held in the Mellieha by the Mellieha Scouts and the Band of St. Michael School Scout Group of Pembroke.
8.00p.m – A show will then be held with the collaboration of the Mellieha Local Council, presented by Charles Saliba.

• Monday, 27 th August

8.00p.m – Get Together for the emigrants at the La Vittoria Band Club. A power point presentation will be seen about Mellieha now and in the past. A momentum will be given to all the emigrants for this occasion.

• Tuesday, 28 th August

7.00p.m – A show will be held at the Mellieha Parish Square from kids to kids. A number of residents from the ‘Dar tal-Providenza’ will be invited for this occasion, presented by Corinne Truner.
8.30p.m – Get Together for the members of the Society will be held at the Club’s Hall.

• Wednesday, 29 th August

8.00p.m – Band Marches by the La Vittoria Band starting from the Club passing from Salvinu Vella Street, G.Borg Olivier Street and back to the Parish Square where the hymn ‘La Vittoria Xrara ta Nar’ will be played. Lyrics of Eric Bonanno and music of Maestro Joseph Vella.

11.00p.m - There will be Fireworks obtained from the Barmen of the Club Michael & Charles Cutajar and friends from the Pyrotechnics group of Mellieha.

• Thursday, 30 th August

8.00p.m – Get Together for all the members of the Society.

• Friday, 31 st August

8.00p.m – Band Marches by the La Vallette Band from Saint Anne Street to the Parish Square. A concert will be held afterwards on stage.

• Saturday, 1 st September

9.30am – A day out for all the children to the Splash & Fun Water Park at Bahar ic-Caghaq.

• Sunday, 2 nd September

7.30p.m – A vocal and instrumental programm by La Vittoria Band on stage presented by Marisa Mifsud. Commemorative presents will be given to the society and band.

• Monday, 3 rd September

7.30p.m – Elderly people of Mellieha are invited for a Tombla party for the occasion of the feast

• Tuesday, 4 th September

8.00p.m – On stage the Youth Band will present a program of Talented Music presented by J. Anvil & Claudia Faniello.

• Wednesday, 5 th September

8.30p.m - Band Marches by the Duke of Connaught Band of B’Kara from Triq l-Gherien to the Parish Square

• Thursday, 6 th September

7.30p.m – Band Marches by the La Vittoria Band from the Sanctuary to the Parish Square ending with the hymn of La Vittoria

• Friday, 7 th September

7.30p.m – Band Marches by the La Vittoria Band from the Main Street to the Parish Square 9.15p.m – On stage La Vittoria Band Club will perform the hymn in honour of our Lady of Victories directed by Mro. Joseph Vella. Momentum will be presented afterwards

• Saturday, 8 th September

9.45a.m - The flag will be hanged to celebrate this historic moment bye the President of the Society Mr. Anthony E.Vella and committee members. Band March will then be held from the Parish Square passing from St.Paul s Street, Il-Vitorja Street, G.Borg Olivier Street and back to the Parish Square.
5.45p.m - Saint Helen's Band of B'kara will play band marches from Saint Anne Street to the Parish Square. A concert will then be held on stage including the hymn of Our Lady of Victories. At the end the committee invites the Pyrotechincs Group of Mellieha for a Get Together.
